Equivocation Fallacy

The Fallacy of Equivocation occurs when a key term in an argument is used in 2 or more different ways,. For example someone might argue that we should do X because it is fair, but they assume that fair means everyone gets the same share regardless of the work that they have done; while that is one definition of fairness but another is everyone gets a share proportional to the work that they put in. If one person did 98% of the work, another did 2% and three others did nothing, should they all get equal amounts. When looking for ways to attack arguments, watch for changes in meanings of key words. It is particularly common with words that most people inherently support (e.g. democracy, justice, equality, fairness, rights) or are against (e.g.  racism, sexism, colonialism).
