Area Analysis

Area Analysis involves looking at a few areas affected by the resolution. For instance if the debate was about reducing the work week, the areas could be the economy, personal life, politics, education, and society. Don't have too many areas – 2 to 4 is usually best.  It can be a good way of expanding an argument that only has one reason, but it is also useful in other situations.

Use area analysis to find areas that you could use for the following arguments

1.      The school year should be longer

2.      We should legalize all drugs

3.      This House would abolish private health insurance in the US

4.      Indigenous groups should have a veto on projects on their traditional lands

5.      This House would legalize performance enhancing drugs

6.      This House would return cultural treasures to their countries of origin

7.      This House would impose a carbon tax

8.      This House would impose a congestion fee on vehicles in large cities

9.      Junk food should be banned in schools

10.  All students in school should have to take part in an extracurricular sport team
