Common Arguments
Here are some arguments that can apply to many resolutions.
Thin edge of the wedge/principle/precedent aka slippery slope
Opportunity costs
Chill effect
Banning/ Nanny state issues – drive it underground, can't regulate requires losing freedom and ignoring someone’s decision, govt judgment replaces yours, not suit everyone, won’t work because ones that need help will ignore rules, hurt many for sake of few, better approaches/real problem
Caution is best policy
Harm reduction
Principle argument – show principle then that the resolution follows from it (or goes against it if you are on the other side)
Democracy – do what people want, give choice,
Ain’t broke don’t fix it – is there a real problem
Pragmatic argument rather than principle
Where do you draw the line rather than absolute
Is there another answer/solution/problem? How do you decide which is better?
