Chill Effect
The Chill Effect refers to the fact that if there is a severe negative consequence for a particular action, it often discourages (chills) other actions that are in any way similar. For example, a successful lawsuit against a school for an accident on a school trip that was badly managed might lead to a school banning all school trips for fear of another lawsuit, or a vague law banning teaching about a particular topic in a certain way may lead to no one teaching about that topic at all in case they might get charged by an overenthusiastic prosecutor. When considering your opponent's argument, see if it might cause harm by unintentionally discouraging other beneficial or desirable activities.Â
